How sharp are you when it comes to avoiding scams? Scammers rely on your quick clicking and slow thinking nformation they need and infect your computer. The messages you receive are quick, sound official and leave you to keep right on going, not think, and click those damning links. Scam #1 – Your computer is infected! This one alone has caused more grief to the new web surfer than most real virus attacks. This ‘your computer is infected!’ message comes from a rogue antivirus product. It’s sole job is to convince you that your computer is infected, usually by having you run some scan to remove the infection they offer you that will confirm the infection so that you hand over money for ‘antivirus protection’ which never materializes. Through deceit and trickery, these users of rogue antivirus products make an exceptional living off hapless victims. Every click you make makes it virtually impossible to simply close it down. It freezes your computer when you try. Rogue Product means the site, the message, the approach look genuine. The scam: Convince the victim that their computer is infected. Open popup windows with fake warning messages; hijack search engine results to launch bogus “antivirus scans”; place benign “malware” files on the victim’s computer; convince the victim to download and run a malicious executable, then refuse to remove the executable unless the victim pays an exhorbitant“license fee.” Stop and think when you see an alert like this. If in panic, you click on it, immediately close down your browser, clean it, and run a full scan with your own updated anti-virus and be doubly sure there is no infection on your computer. Don’t panic and don’t pay! The fastest way out of a no way out condition is to reboot, or shut your computer off in a cold boot so that it is gone. Have you been caught by such alerts?
