Squidoo Lens of the Day
Dear President Elect
Posted: 04 Nov 2008 06:41 PM PST
At the time of this posting (3:40pm PST on November 4th, 2008) we don't know who will win the election. We will soon.
Any chad-catastrophes aside, either Obama or McCain will wake up tomorrow, on the morning of November 5th, with the knowledge that precious weeks later he will step into the Oval Office.
Regardless of who wins, this lens by the ever industrious, illustrious lensmaster John Fenzel should be an interesting read.

The (Street) Art of Stencil Graffiti
-
Stencil graffiti is growing in popularity worldwide. This street art can be a few simple words, or a grand scale art piece. Because it is cheap, quick, and easy, this style of graffiti has grown tremendously. Often the stencils express political and...

-
Very little has been mentioned about possible rioting after the upcoming 2008 Presidential Election. Perhaps the press has more faith in our citizens, or just does not wish to put the idea into people's heads, but I think the possibility needs to at...
Obama Murals
These grand displays of street art may be graffiti, but because of the time involved, I suspect most of them are with permission of the owner. Artwork like these define an era. It is extraordinary what inspired people can create, and most Obama supporters consider themselves inspired by him.
Your Opinion on Campaign Graffiti
These graffiti street art works are not sponsored by the campaign, but rather are expressions of support by individuals working on their own.

Anti-McCain Graffiti
I have still not been able to find one single pro-McCain stencil on the web. These are a few anti-McCain works:
Anti-Palin Graffiti
The selection of Sarah Palin as McCain's VP choice may have thrown a curve ball at the campaign, but I suspect she did as much harm as good. These street artists are clearly not fans.
About Sarah Palin
Sarah Palin
-
John McCain caught everyone off-guard when he announced Sarah Palin as his running mate for the 2008 GOP presidential ticket. The grass-roots effort to get Palin on the ticket had been gaining ground since the beginning of the year when she first sta...
What does this all mean?
There is clearly much more Obama street art than McCain street art around.
Is the abundance of Obama graffiti, compared to McCain graffiti, proof that Obama has wider support?

No, It is just graffiti, it means nothing.

CCGAL says:
My guess is that McCain supporters are less likely to break the laws against defacing public property with graffiti.

kiwisoutback says:
No, I don't think it means he has more support necessarily, but there just seems to be more artists that support Obama.

Probably depends what neighborhood you're in. I live in a highly Republican area, and these folks just spray paint their own signs for McCain. Not very artistic but definitely expressive.

SusanVillasLewis says:
My own serious research (rooting around on Zazzle for items to put on my political lenses) shows that the reality is that Obama just attracts better graphic designers. By extension, it could just be that he has attracted the street artist segment as well. I'm sure the stick-figure crowd is squarely with McCain.

Yes, it shows he is more on the minds of the public.

Margo_Arrowsmith says:
I don't know, but over 300 electoral votes sure does! But it sure does show that he lights the imaginations of the country. That and his community organizing skills will mean a lot of the difficult task of first cleaning up the mess and then moving this country to a great place!

CherylK says:
I think he's more on the minds of the public but I also agree that it's probably because that segment of the population (artists & younger voters) is more Pro Obama. They're sure talented, whatever the reason!

Alicia_Finance says:
I would have to agree. This campaign has been monumental in reaching and appealing to more groups than before. I believe that this inspires untapped demographics to get out and vote......weather it be for Obama or McCain.

rms says:
I think the abundance of Obama street art reflects the age of his most enthusiastic supporters. He definitely appeals to the younger set who are more likely to be doing the graffiti.
His supporters also seem to be more outspoken.
Don't know what this all means. We'll have to watch and wait tongiht to find out!

Grassroots
These photos show street art with little planning. They are a testament of how widespread his support is, and how some people will do anything to get out his name, albeit in an ugly and illegal manner.
Barack Chalk
While not as permanent as painted graffiti, chalk drawings are a popular street art that can leave a poignant message. Whether it is a grand piece of art, or simple lettering, chalk drawings can certainly drive home a point.
